FOOT FOR SOPRAGGITTO
It is a seam that is used more to prevent the fabric from fraying on the reverse. It is very suitable especially for heavy fabrics, for which it is not possible to use English seams or beaten, as they are too bulky. Some sewing machines are designed to sew and finish the edges with a single operation. The zigzag stitch has more elasticity than the straight point and is therefore less subject to the risk of breakage. The stitches are formed diagonally, it is often also used as an external finishing for decorative purposes (especially on jeans).
GUIDELINES
1. If you want to use a normal zigzag stitch, mount the zigzag foot on the machine first and then operate with a straight seam 1.5 cm from the edges. Combine with a zigzag that comes as close as possible to the edges. Look at the picture. Know that the zig zag can vary in both length and width. With the normal zigzag close to the edges, you avoid having to trim the edges later. Once the work is done, iron on one side.
2. If, on the other hand, you want to make a tight zigzag stitch (always adjust this stitch progressively, up to a maximum width), you must first perform a straight seam of the two fabrics, respecting the distance from the margins that I have already reported (ie 1.5 cm). Then, keeping close enough to the seam you performed, you need to join the edges with a wide zigzag. Once trembling, trim, patiently and wisely, with scissors the fabric of the margins, the one you see near the zig zag and that overflows it.
3. For the so-called "fake" above, which is also incorporated into sewing machines, you must operate with a single phase: straight seam and zigzag stitching. It is important to remember that it is a type of seam that must absolutely be used in cases of both medium-weight fabrics and in fairly heavy ones, because these are fabrics that tend to fraying with a really impressive ease.
